| Welcome to the Service Users Complementary Holistic
(SUCH) Project website. Hosted by Mind in Taunton and West Somerset, the SUCH Project was set up in 2003 to provide
access to complementary and holistic treatments to anyone suffering mental
distress, be they service users, carers, volunteers or anyone working in the
Mental Health system. To navigate this
website, click on the links in the left-hand menu. You can view
the treatments we offer via the links on the main menu, or the pictures on
the right.
SUCH: Holistic Care for All
The beneficial effects of Complementary and Holistic therapies,
particularly in the treatment of mental distress, is now widely
acknowledged. In 2002, Taunton based Maggi Rowan made it her mission
to see that these therapies became available to as many people as possible,
regardless of their ability to pay. Funding came after Maggi's project
called SUCH (Service Users Complementary Holistic) won a MIND Millennium
Award.
What can I expect?
Trained volunteers called Holistic Helpers assist Maggi in running the
Project, by welcoming people and serving juices, herbal tea and plenty of
tender loving care.
A consultation precedes every treatment to establish the specific
requirements of the individual and to help plan which treatments will be the most useful.
Funding and projects
The SUCH Project is a charity. It is funded with grants and donations. Individual
treatments are offered at low cost, and donations are requested from those
who can afford them. Each client is asked to give a donation of between £2
and £5 to help ensure the future of the project.
Those benefiting from the SUCH Project from its beginnings in 2002 to
March 2008 number 1,537 people, 1,016 of whom are clients receiving therapy.
Presentations of our work and workshops have been given to a number of
community groups across the county.
In 2008 the SUCH Project was awarded a 3-year grant to provide therapies
in the Acute Unit in Taunton, and is also funded to work in the Forensic
Unit. We are now applying for a grant from the Big Lottery to further our
current work, and to carry out more outreach work. Future project work
includes working in Wells Hospital.

Maggi says, “Changing my life style, exercising,
food, herbs and aromatherapy, has done for me what ECT and drug therapy
failed to do!”
